Learning and practicing a new program can be arduous and frustrating. You need to read the documentation, set up the software, learn all of its quirks and tricks, and figure out how to use it on your computer. The task of learning a new program is so formidable that it can lead to such apathy and indifference toward the program in question that the user may not recommend it to others. This took place when Microsoft Access was released in 1990. At that time, Access was a new software product which was not available on any operating system for home computer use, but had to be used with an expensive workstation. The costs of buying one of these machines quickly became prohibitive for the average user. Access forced users to learn a new system when they needed it most, when they couldn't afford to pay for professional help or training. Even after this was all overcome, the power of the program was not immediately obvious to novice users. Perhaps the difference between novice and experienced Access users can be summed up by noting that word processing programs are intuitive for people who have worked with them before, but Access is not. The Learning Curve for Microsoft Access is quite steep due to its powerful features. The first thing users notice about Access is that it is different from other programs they have used in the past because it offers a set of powerful, relational database management capabilities. It also operates within a completely different environment than most other applications, requiring a change in the way users think about database applications. For many novice users, these factors can be difficult barriers to learning Microsoft Access. The visibility of objects is limited to the area currently within the margins of the screen. Every command and control has a unique and easily recognizable appearance, which makes it relatively easy to locate and use them once they have been located. The forms, buttons, and toolbars all look different from each other. A new form appears in the Database window each time you create one. If you add or remove controls from a form that has already been created, however, the changes do not show up in that form window. Instead, they appear on a new form. The work area onscreen can be viewed full-size on most monitors with an aspect ratio of 4:3 (which is standard). On some monitors, the size of the work area can be set to be larger. If you are using Windows 3.1, there are several user interface changes that should not be confused with Access database files. The directory windows looks different from other file windows, because it does not have a back button to show all the files in a directory. There is no Undo command—if you select an item and press delete, all its corresponding locations are deleted. The Open dialog box cannot display files that are not in your Windows directory. When you start Microsoft Access for the first time or when you next use it after having used another application that has used Access recently, the Welcome dialog box appears instead of the Welcome To Access dialog box. cfa1e77820
